Unleashing the Potential of Chitang®: A Natural Boost for Watermelon Cultivation

Introduction:

In the pursuit of meeting the rising demands of a growing population and catering to foreign markets, an ambitious agricultural plan has been set in motion, focusing on expanding agricultural areas. This expansion involves cultivating reclaimed lands, with watermelon being a key crop due to its high economic returns. This blog post explores the impact of Chitang®, a natural plant growth promoter, on the yield and fruit quality parameters of watermelon, shedding light on its potential to revolutionize cultivation practices.

The Significance of Watermelon Cultivation:

India, the second-largest producer of watermelons globally, annually contributes between 2-3 million tonnes. The economic impact of watermelon cultivation in India is substantial, with an estimated annual production of 1,630,000 tons valued at approximately 169.96 million US dollars.

Beyond its economic value, watermelon is recognized for its nutritional benefits and as a rich source of lycopene (Figure 1), a phytochemical known for potential anti-cancer properties. Health Benefits of Watermelon Consumption: Recent research studies have highlighted the health benefits associated with watermelon consumption. Daily ingestion of watermelon juice, a natural source of citrulline, has been shown 14 to increase plasma arginine concentrations, suggesting positive effects on cardiovascular and immunologic functions. These health-related benefits contribute to the growing global interest in watermelon production.

Challenges in Reclaimed Land Cultivation:

The cultivation of reclaimed lands comes with its challenges, with poor fertility being a common issue. This necessitates specialized fertilization programs and applications of plant growth promoters. Current trends favor natural alternatives, leading us to the introduction of Chitang® (Figure 2)

Introducing Chitang:

Chitang® is a novel and innovative formulation harnessing marine chitosan oligosaccharide derived from natural sources. With its precisely optimized structure, chain length, molecular weight, and uniform deacetylation, Chitang® serves as a powerful signal to plants and a plant growth promoter. It stimulates synthesis processes, triggers defense mechanisms, and plays a pivotal role in helping plants overcome stress

Chitang in Action: A Farmer's Success Story:

Figure 3. Mr. Sarathy, a farmer from Endiyur village panchayat in Tindivanam, Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Sarathy, a farmer from Endiyur village panchayat in Tindivanam, Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu, adopted Chitang® in his watermelon fields (Figure 3. Applying 1-1.5 liters of Chitang® per acre every 30 days through drip irrigation, Mr. Sarathy observed marked improvements in watermelon’s vegetative growth and a corresponding increase in fruit weight compared to the control group

Effects of Chitang® on Yield and Fruit Quality Parameters:

Figure 4 Effect of Chitang® on yield of watermelon

Figure 4 illustrates, the mean weight of control or untreated plants was 5966 gm, while Chitang®-incorporated plants produced fruits with a mean weight of 7245 gm, representing a 21.44% increase in weight compared to the untreated plants

Figure 5. Effect of Chitang® on nutritional parameters of watermelon.

The application of Chitang® demonstrated a constructive influence on various nutritional parameters, resulting in enhanced yields across different metrics. Mineral contents in terms of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium showed the highest content in Chitang®, with the lowest content observed in the control. Further, the percentage of total sugar was also highest in the
Chitang® treated plants (Figure 5).

Vegetative growth parameters such as plant height, number of leaves, and leaf fresh weight per plant (gm) were also monitored, as depicted in Figure 6. It showed that Chitang® influenced
vegetative growth positively.

Conclusion

In essence, Mr. Sarathy’s successful utilization of Chitang® in watermelon cultivation showcases a beneficial practice. The positive correlations observed between Chitang® and improved vegetative growth, fruit weight, and nutritional compositions underline the potential of natural growth promoters in the context of cultivating reclaimed lands. This integrated approach, incorporating natural solutions and innovative techniques, contributes to the sustainable development of agriculture, meeting both economic and health-conscious objectives. As we continue to explore eco-friendly alternatives, Chitang® emerges as a promising solution for enhancing crop yields and ensuring the quality of agricultural produce.
